"How do animals learn? Toward an algorithmic understanding"

Dopamine regulates multiple brain functions including learning, motivation, and movement. It has been thought that midbrain dopamine neurons send out a teaching signal – a so-called "reward prediction error" used in machine learning, to the rest of the brain to facilitate learning to predict future outcomes. Recent studies, however, have found more diverse dopamine signals than originally thought. How can we reconcile these results? In this talk, I will discuss our recent studies characterizing diverse dopamine signals, and what "logic" animals use to learn from experiences.
